The project lead for He Toa Taumata Rau, Tepora Emery is the Kaihautu Rangahau Māori at Toi Ohomai Te Pūkenga and the lead investigator. Creating, supporting and facilitating rangahau, research and education pathways, opportunities and transformative outcomes for whānau, hapū, iwi and communities, is central to her work.

Cheyenne grew up as an ‘army brat’ with both parents in the military. With an undergraduate degree in law, she completed her master's degree at the University of Waikato, and her thesis was titled Te mana o ngā toa: Māori experiences of Ngāti Tūmatauenga, the New Zealand Army. Cheyenne is also completing her internship for the Postgraduate Diploma in the Practice of Psychology (Community) while working on the project.

Associate Professor McBride (Lt Col) is Director of the University of Otago’s Research Theme: ‘Health of Veterans, Serving Personnel and their Families’. David commissioned in the Territorial Army as a Troop Commander (RCT) in 1981. Since coming to New Zealand in 1995 he has served as CO of the Otago and Southland Regiment and has deployed as a medical officer to East Timor and Afghanistan.

Heather is the Head of Research at Toi Ohomai Te Pūkenga. She holds a PhD in community psychology from the University of Waikato, is bilingual (English and te reo Māori) and has a wealth of experience working in multidisciplinary research including He Toa Taumata Rau.

Candy Cookson Cox

Candy is a master researcher, storyteller and teacher. She effortlessly weaves together the traditional and contemporary within challenging topics lifting the darkness and sharing poignant stories to build understanding and compassion. She shares her expertise in Māori and Indigenous health, child and adolescent health, ethics and health law, mental health, health and education curriculum development, workforce development strategies and suicide prevention and postvention amongst others.

Izak Clarke

Ngā Puhi, Ngāti Tama te Rā

New and emerging researcher, Veteran

After just over a decade serving with the NZ Army, Izak has worked with serving and retired veterans in many fields including his time in the Infantry and a small posting to the Youth Development Unit where he facilitated young people of Aotearoa through a military training programme. Izak also worked for a mental health charity called Mates in construction where he continued his passion for helping others. Izak was also involved in the battalion whakairo having been interested as a young man, this project now gives izak the ability to continue those passions moving forward. 

Paruhiterangi O’Callaghan

Paruhiterangi served in the New Zealand Army for 14 years before returning home to Maketū with a plan to semi-retire and work on his golf handicap. However, he was inspired to strengthen his reo, so went back to study at the University of Waikato, gaining a diploma in Te Tohu Paetahi.

Maxwell Rolston

Maxwell “Rolly” served in the New Zealand Army for 20 years, leaving in 1989. Prior to retirement, he worked as the Secretary/Manager of Rotorua Royal New Zealand Returned and Services’Association for 23 years until 2013. Rolly also supports contemporary veterans to access help and support from Veterans’ Affairs.

Michael Walker

Michael served 14 years in the NZDF, 11 years with the RNZN as an Engineer and Defence Diver and three years with the NZ Army (Territorial Forces). Michael is committed to improving the mental health outcomes of currently serving NZDF personnel and the veteran community. With his love for hunting in the alpine environment and the positive mental health benefits there in, this has naturally led Michael and his wife Jo to work with SSAANZ managing the RNZN contingent: Clear Lower Deck.

Janet served as an officer in the Army for 28 eight years. She started her career as a Territorial soldier in 1975, joined the Regular Force in 1977 and was commissioned into RNZSigs in December 1977. Janet has served in many appointments in the RSA, and she currently serves as the District Support Manager (DSM) for the Wairarapa/Hawkes Bay/East Coast District.

Anna is a CBT therapist and Mental Health Nurse Practitioner. Anna works in practice for Tamaki Health and is the clinical lead for Just a Thought, a free digital CBT service offering online therapy courses.

Takiri te Ata Raerino

Te Arawa Whānui, Ngāti Awa, Ngāti Maniapoto

Research Support, Web Designer, Transcriber.

Takiri is a kairangahau Māori. Over the years, she has worked on numerous rangahau kaupapa Māori projects including He Toa Taumata Rau. Takiri holds a Bachelor of Commerce, majoring in Management and Psychology and, since graduating in 2018, she has been involved and actively working within Māori Communities and with Māori health, education and social service providers.
